Hatful of Hollow also features the band's debut single, " Hand in Glove", and their two most recent singles prior to the album's release, " Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now" and " William, It Was Really Nothing", along with their respective B-sides, "Girl Afraid", " How Soon Is Now?

Marr's guitar sparkles while Mozzo moans his insightful little blurbs about never having a job because he never really wanted one. Early Smiths release, containing material recorded for several BBC radio sessions as well as other stuff. On “Back to the Old House”, Marr’s reverberating acoustic makes a rare appearance, and coupled only with Morrissey’s voice the song is spare, isolated and effective. Had Marr been overly gloomy or dark in his compositions to match with Morrissey, it would have made the record unbearable to listen to.For those unfamiliar with the Smiths, it was a fitting introduction to the best aspects of the group. In many ways, Hatful Of Hollow was the album the Mancunian quartet’s burgeoning army of fans had been praying for, as it offered officially-sanctioned versions of the tracks they’d already taped from the buzz-building BBC Radio 1 sessions The Smiths recorded for the John Peel and David “Kid” Jensen shows during 1983.

Some felt John Porter’s production had taken the heat out of the songs laid down for both The Smiths and the band’s early singles, and certainly the thrillingly raw, energy-infused Hatful Of Hollow versions of tracks such as You’ve Got Everything Now, What Difference Does It Make? The Smiths had an impressive catalogue in their regrettably short life, and the fact that they were able to release such an exceptional compilation after nothing more than one album to their name is a testament to their early musical spark and vigour. If we had a John Peel type on the US government's payroll, I'd be willing to live with a despot or two.

They are regarded as one of the most important acts to emerge from the 1980s British independent music scene. Enhanced by material of this quality, Hatful Of Hollow was rightly hailed as an important milestone, with a later BBC retrospective rightly noting that it marked “the point where even the doubters began to really believe the hype surrounding the band”. The Smiths, to me, were one of the bands that it was okay to like if you were 'alternative', but didn't possess many of the harsh characterstics of many other punk-inspired bands.
