Description

The ceramic version has three protruding ribs meant to raise the bottom of the filter. These ribs are protruding far enough that you don’t have to worry about the filter getting dragged down to the weight of the slurry. Also, the holes are placed to the side of the ribs, which makes it even more difficult for clogging to happen. Watch the coffee bloom (bubbles) for about 30-45 seconds, after which the bubbles will stop forming. This is a great chance to take a sniff - it will smell wonderful. The Tsubame is similar to the glass version, in the sense that it doesn’t have ribs. However, the bottom is less convex.

As the former owner of a third-wave coffee shop, I’ve tried just about every kind of coffee maker you can buy, and the Kalita Wave is my preferred vessel for making pour-over coffee. Grind your coffee using a medium grind setting. It's best to grind recently roasted whole bean coffee, and to do this right before you brew, as you'll be using the freshest coffee possible. Kalita wave is very affordable, just at a similar price level to the other pour-over drippers available in the market place. How To Choose? Kalita Wave 185 or 155? A good coffee to water ratio to start with is 1:16. That’s 0.75 ounces (1.5 tablespoons) of coffee for every 12 ounces of water. How do I clean my Kalita Wave? When it comes to choosing a Kalita Wave 155 vs a Kalita Wave 185, consider how much coffee you want to make and drink at a time. How do you choose then? Well, if you’re someone who only brews one cup of coffee at home in the morning before you leave for work, then the 185 isn’t necessary. The Wave line of pour-over coffee makers is known for being user-friendly and foolproof. A few unique features make this the case. First, the “wave” name comes from the filters, which feature vertical “waves,” not unlike your typical store-brand coffee filter. These waves allow the water to flow evenly through the filter for smooth extraction.

This process causes the coffee to start bubbling. You should then stir the coffee. After 45 seconds of brewing, pour 200 more grams of water, doing so in a spiral to integrate the ingredients.

20 Waves

The blooming should be done in 30 seconds. Pour about 200 grams of water within a minute, spiraling from the inside to the outside.

That brings us to the Kalita Wave glass model. This version features a polypropylene base and a dripper made of heat-resistant glass. The 155 glass dripper is 4.52 inches by 4.52 inches by 3.03 inches. The larger 185 glass dripper measures 4.65 inches by 4.65 inches by 3.66 inches.Kalita Wave requires less control. If you accidentally pour too much water, the small holes make it up for you. You are more likely to have more stable coffee and a more predictable flavor. Set the filter into the brewer and rinse the filter with hot water before brewing. This step is optional, but many people agree that it reduces the papery taste that a paper filter can sometimes impart.

Then there’s a baseplate, which surrounds the cone so you can put the Kalita Wave over a serving vessel of your choice. An easy-to-grab handle is another feature that’s there for safety’s sake. Kalita is a Japanese manufacturer of drip-based coffee equipment. Established in 1958, this brand holds the title for bringing at-home coffee brewing to Japan. Prior to Kalita, coffee was available only at restaurants and coffee shops in Japan, so these products were revolutionary. Unlike drip coffee machines or French Press, pour-over coffee requires an involved process and additional brewing equipment. It involves careful technique, precise ratios and measurements, and lots and lots of practice.Using the Kalita Wave is pretty straightforward, especially if you’re familiar with other pour-over coffee makers. Even if this is your maiden voyage, however, we think you’ll find it surprisingly simple! After one minute, add another 130 grams of water for a total now of 250 grams. Wait one more minute, and complete one more pour for a total of 320 grams of water. Once all of the water has drained through the grounds, enjoy your delicious coffee! Kalita Wave 155 vs 185 However, to put it simply, pour-over coffee is difficult and often frustrating. The coffee can taste very sour and astringent or overly bitter and generally unpalatable if done incorrectly.
