About this deal

I don't tend to like these types of characters, but for some reason it was hard to dislike him as a character. Audrey's life story was a very real one - I felt for her and very much understood how everything in her life had led her to think and act the way that she did. With a superb display of actual true relationships in reality, Audrey shows us that what you see in movies is only half the truth. Love is never like it is in the movies, that much Audrey knows and what with the heartbreak she’s already had to deal with, she’s absolutely sure not to make the same mistake again.

I understand this was most likely tongue-in-cheek and all that, but I found the MC often judged things very harshly while she herself engaged in the same behavior, which quickly turned me off from her.But in this funny, insightful, and ultimately empowering novel, love—and life—isn’t what it’s like in the movies. If I were to describe the story of It Only Happens in the Movies it would be that it's a unflinching raw truthful look at 'Why love is never like the movies'. What I liked so much is how it challenges the representation of romance throughout films (I'm also going to include books as well) and how it's not always perfect and happy.

The movie either ends when the couple gets together, or someone dies before you can see the relationship develop. There are plenty of girls who eat burgers and are still thin, there are girls who desperately want to gain weight but remain tiny no matter how much they eat, there are girls who like wearing matching underwear, girls who are clumsy, girls who are neat. We get to see the challenges Audrey faces when a relationship breaks down, both hers and her parents, friendships and the after effect this causes. regardless, theres just something that kept me from truly connecting with the story, the writing, and the characters. I was really annoyed by the author continously denouncing the clichés in movies, and then using the same clichés, isn't it contradicting?

As much as I do enjoy a good romance flick, they don’t explore any of the messy bits of relationships and can be so predictable!

The Written Review Audrey has sworn off romance - and NO not in a "totally swears it off but is secretly looking for love" - she actually means it. In the movies this always works … in It Only Happens in the Movies, it also works, just not quite in the way Harry expects. Some new books that I’ve heard a lot of excitement about and are coming out in September are: Before She Ignites (release date: 12/09/2017), Girls Made of Snow and Glass (release date: 05/09/2017), The Loneliest Girl in the Universe (release date: 07/09/2017). It Only Happens in the Movies is Bourne’s first standalone YA novel after finishing The Spinster Club series, and it departs from that series enough to stand out while still presenting the same fresh, feminist ideas that are a hallmark of Bourne’s writing.I feel like so many books focus on "finding love" and this one took that but also made things grounded. Audrey’s parents are also going through a divorce and Holly Bourne portrayed the conflicting feelings and raw emotions of that experience so well. There are girls who have cellulite in all shapes and sizes and what is with this obsession with having sex with the lights off? This book has one of the best endings ever and one that leaves a bittersweet warmth spreading in your heart.

The reality is usually messier, though, and Bourne captures that well with this: Audrey respects Harry as a film auteur, appreciates his gesture, wishes him well … but doesn’t give him a second chance. It’s very compelling, watching her struggle to hold on to some sense of normality in her family ties, even as her definition of family fluctuates and might implode. I just want to take a moment to say thank you to all of you out there who actually read what I post and follow my blog – it means so much to me and I appreciate each and every comment and follow I get so thank you so much! Audrey’s mom is struggling with the fallout of her divorce, and Audrey has to step up and parent her parent more than a seventeen-year-old girl should have to do. there are so many instances of brilliance in this book that i have more than 5 highlights (unheard of for me) so i can go back and soak up more of the brilliance when life gets me down.against the father who left you and doesn’t realize you quit the one thing that made you happy, then when can you? but normally, I just don’t cry at books or films – I just mope obsessively about them afterwards, but this one had me weeping because it ended.
