About this deal

If you’ve used the previous YDP-143 model, you’ll notice that the overall design hasn’t changed, (though that is certainly not a bad thing). Apart from that, the YDP-164 comes with a sliding key cover and a music rest. As with the overall build quality, these feel excellent and durable. The matte coating also makes the YDP-164 resistant to fingerprints, which is encouraging news for people with sweaty palms.

Speaker On/Off. Allows you to choose if the speakers are enabled or not, regardless of whether headphones are connected. A very interesting feature, that might be considered by some a matter of finesse, is the Stereophonic Optimizer. The limited number of controls means that you’ll need to access many functions by using key combinations, sometimes involving the piano keys themselves. This results in a playing experience that is as close to a genuine acoustic piano as you could wish for. Intelligent Acoustic Control

The cool thing about this function is that you can record the actual sound of the YDP-164 without the need for a separate audio interface.

Note that to connect to an iOS device, you’ll need to rely on a Lightning-to-USB Camera adapter, or the Yamaha Wireless MIDI adapter. The only similarity between the Yamaha YDP-144 and the Yamaha P125 in matters of sound is the way they render the sound. Both use sound samples from acoustic pianos. But this is also where the similarities stop. While you are getting the expected heft and realism of real keys, everything that happens pass the initial press downwards is not something I’m fond of. Overall, I’m quite disappointed by the new Yamaha YDP-144. It feels to me like a lazy upgrade from Yamaha. The only meaningful difference from its predecessor is the sound engine. As it stands, the YDP-164 still sounds outstanding, so it’s a shame to lose some of the control that comes with other competitors. The Yamaha YDP-143 was released in 2016. Three years later, we finally see an upgraded version from Yamaha in January 2019. The YDP-144 is replacing the 143. Unfortunately, not much has been changed. They are in many aspects identical to one another. I am honestly quite disappointed with this new model from Yamaha. In this Yamaha YDP-144 review , I will show you every aspect of this new digital piano from Yamaha. But more importantly, I want to highlight the difference between the new YDP-144 and the 3-years-old YDP-143. DESIGN

The Yamaha YDP-164 comes with dual 20W amplified speakers, which are extremely powerful and also provide a wide stereo image. Technically, the body of the YDP-164 is made from particleboard, but the finish and density make it feel solid.

Should You Buy a Used Digital Piano? - 2023 Report

This only functions when you’re using headphones. Real pianos are always a short space away from the player, but headphones play closely-mic’d samples near your ears. At the deep end of the keyboard, there is a single line of red velvet that adds a nice accent and a premium feel to the instrument. The Yamaha CLP-series, also known as the Clavinova series, is Yamaha’s high-end digital piano line, and the CLP-625 is the most affordable model in this series. If you don’t want to deal with the hassle of cabling, you can consider the Yamaha UD-BT01 wireless MIDI adapter. For when even more discretion is required in the form of a pair of headphones, you need not worry about loss of sound quality.

The Smart Pianist App helps you integrate your phone or tablet (I prefer the tablet because it has a bigger screen), so that you can use it with the YDP-144 or the P125. Besides having the capability to control all of the piano’s functions from your touchscreen, which is an obvious thing, there’s a very interesting feature that you can take advantage of only with this app. I’m talking about the Chord Chart. This function analyzes any musical piece you enter and displays chords on the screen so that you can easily learn to play that piece. Unless you have an Apple device you unfortunately can’t use this app, but I’m sure an Android version is in the making. So, if you have an Android device, don’t worry, you will probably be able to use this app in the near future. Those 2 models have the same two smaller speakers within the piano cabinet but the power amplifiers go up to two 20 watt amps for a total of 40 watts which is slightly more than 2 times the power of the YDP-144, and that's a good thing.Soft helps with practicing your dynamic control, and hard helps you practice striking strength and velocity. The RH3 keys are slightly lighter when compared to the GH3 action, but not in the cheap and flimsy sense. They feel great to play and are surprisingly realistic, despite not having the synthetic ivory or ebony keytops found on the YDP-164.
